Northeast Resource Recovery Awarded Northeast Resource Recovery Association (NRRA) is pleased to announce official notification of a USDA Grant Award of $69,229 for educational outreach to transfer facilities and schools throughout NH and VT. Working in collaboration with the Association of Vermont Recyclers, NRRA will target communities that have not been contacted recently to bring them additional technical assistance. In addition to the USDA Award, NRRA and AVR are joint recipients of $41.010, to support additional, dedicated, school “Community within the Community” educational programming throughout the twin state region. Included in this grant is support for two Northeast School Conferences to be held in the spring of 2011. NH the Beautiful had previously awarded NRRA a $25,000 school program grant that has been used for the spring 2010 outreach program and culminated in an outpouring of over 110 school attendees at the first in the nation School Recycling Conference held on June 7, 2010 in Manchester NH as part of the NRRA 29th Annual Conference and Expo. These awards, along with an earlier NH Charitable Foundation Grant of $4,500 will allow NRRA to increase its outreach efforts, increase data gathering and will assist NRRA in meeting its primary directive of regional recycling education and technical assistance. NRRA will continue its close work with the Association of Vermont Recyclers to improve both education and outreach efforts in both the Green Mountain and Granite State, and both organizations foresee strong futures thanks in part to these awards! 2010 RECYCLING AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED As part of the 29th Annual Recycling Conference and Expo held on June 7th and 8th in Manchester, NH, NRRA, New Hampshire the Beautiful and The School Recycling CLUB awarded over 20 awards to towns, individuals and schools. Thank you to all our our award winners for their dedication to recycling. Check out the award winners and conference pictures! JOINT OPERATIONS BEGIN IMMEDIATELY!
The Association of Vermont Recyclers and the Northeast Resource Recovery Association announce joint operations effective immediately, with the overwhelming support of both Governing Boards. NRRA will provide financial and administrative support for AVR programming in Vermont, and expand AVR’s public school recycling program offerings to NRRA communities throughout the Northeast. “This partnership is the culmination of nearly a year of collaborative effort between both NRRA’s and AVR’s staff” says Staunton. “The benefits to both organizations and, more importantly, to the members and citizens we serve, are tremendous. This partnership is an important step towards a bright future forrecycling in the Northeast.” AVR’s acclaimed school education programs, award winning Youth Environmental Summit (YES), outstanding Trash on the Lawn Days, school theater assemblies, and solid and hazardous waste reduction technical assistance are highly valued programming that fulfill the Vermont Solid Waste Management Units’ educational compliance requirements, and create legions of life-long recyclers to help Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. NRRA regards these programs as essential to sustain quality environmental education and technical assistance for years to come. As a direct result of this agreement between the two Boards, AVR Executive Director Norm Staunton will work directly with NRRA Director Michael Durfor. The first school fulfillment programs are being scheduled this month with AVR Environmental Health Programs Manager, Charen Fegard, continuing to schedule and present contracted in-school deliverables. In addition, Heather Greenwood, a new intern from Antioch NE is joining Kelly Pearson from NRRA, and Charen to assist with updating the current program offerings. Both Boards, Executive Directors, and staffs are excited to be working together to support their joint mission goals. Please call NRRA at 1-800-223-0150 or AVR 1-802-224-1000 for more information or to schedule programming. In 1981, four New Hampshire municipalities founded the Northeast Resource Recovery Association, then called the New Hampshire Resource Recovery Association, to provide a clearinghouse for current, up-to-date information and a source of technical and marketing assistance in the general areas of waste reduction and recycling. Since then, membership in the NRRA has grown to include over 400 municipalities, individuals, and businesses in New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut, The NRRA is a member driven organization whose programs are designed and overseen by the members they serve. The Association of Vermont Recyclers (AVR), founded in 1982, is best known for its educational theater programs and its in-class presentations on recycling and other various environmental topics. During its twenty-plus year existence, AVR has been a leader in shaping and defining Vermont's recycling efforts and goals. NEWS! NRRA Announces Permanent Executive Director
Michael has been working on an interim basis with the Association since last December. During that time he has guided the outstanding staff at NRRA through a myriad of initiatives including increased support for member services outreach and technical support programs, the new “Full of Scrap” bulletin, updated market pricing, and single-stream feasibility analysis. He has increased the visibility of the NRRA School Recycling Club programs, and has been responsible for increased cooperation among the family of northeast recycling associations including the Maine Resource Recovery Association, Mass Recycle, and the Association of Vermont Recyclers. It is especially noteworthy that he came to NRRA at the height of the market turmoil late last year and NRRA has maintained movement of material and competitive pricing for its cooperative membership. “Mike has done a truly remarkable job during a particularly difficult period. The record attendance at the Annual Conference in June and the positive improvements in the overall management of the association are a true testament to Mike’s management skills”, says David Krisch, NRRA Board President of Swanzey, N. H. “The Board of Directors adopted its 2009/2010 balanced budget last week in record order given the excellent preparation work done by Mike and the staff.” The Northeast Resource Recovery Association was founded in 1981 by four NH communities to provide a clearinghouse for current, up-to-date information, and a source of technical and marketing assistance in the general areas of waste reduction and recycling. For more information or for any other recycling questions, please contact Mike Durfor, NRRA’s Executive Director at 1-800-223-0150, or mdurfor[at]nrra.net.
